The transition from school to the commercial world is a bewildering experience for any school leaver. While school equips you with most of life’s skills, it requires much more to keep up with the dizzying pace of constantly evolving technology and global business trends.
The Synergy Genius Quiz, a business quiz for Advanced Level students, helps students on the brink of braving the many challenges of the corporate world keep abreast with these rapidly evolving developments.
“The Synergy Genius Quiz is currently the only business quiz for Advanced Level students,” explained Michael Ranasinghe, Director of Synergy School of Marketing.
The quiz consists of categories such as general business, business concepts and theories, economics and general knowledge and even has a bit of sports and entertainment thrown in.
The quiz, which also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Synergy School of Marketing, gives the participants a glimpse of the corporate world and is open to students of all streams.
The schools participating in this quiz are St. Peters College, St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Holy Family Convent, Ladies College, Bishop’s College, Royal College, St. Joseph’s College and Visakha Vidyalaya.
“It’s a chance for us to come up with new things and give our opinions” said Sarah Hewawasam of Ladies College. “While getting together to discuss stuff, we also watch news and gather paper cuttings” she said, explaining their preparations for the quiz.
Michael went on to explain that although all schools have commerce societies, there is no one to help these associations keep in touch with all the current trends and groom them towards the corporate life of a professional. While this quiz is designed to fill this void, it also aspires to add value to their personal life as well.
Sachithra Warusevithana, who has been in the quiz field for the past two years and is a member of the team participating from St. Joseph’s College, acknowledged that he hadn’t heard of a business quiz till the inaugural Synergy Quiz last year.
“You can’t be a frog in the well, when you are a commerce student. You need to be aware of everything happening around you and the rapidly changing business environment. We are trying to find additional sources of business information. We gather information from the internet as well as a variety of business journals in order to get adequate information to help us win the quiz,” elaborated Sachithra.
Having emerged runners-up the previous year and with a will to win, it is clear that their team is geared to make their presence felt.
The Synergy Genius Quiz will kick off on Friday, October 2 at 3pm at the Excel World Auditorium.
Sponsors for the Synergy Genius Quiz 2009 will be Hatton National Bank, James Finlays and MAATFLORA. The Audio Visual Partner Sponsor will be Pan Audio while the Print Media Sponsor for the quiz will be The Sunday Times.
