’The National Trust’ has been formed for the purpose of protecting and safeguarding the tangible and intangible heritage of Sri Lanka. It specifically protects site, monuments, paintings, artifacts, music, dance, the flora and the fauna not safeguarded by any other institution of the Government of Sri Lanka.
Members get the opportunity to meet others and share common interests in the cultural and natural heritage of Sri Lanka. As the Trust works in partnership with respective Government Departments, members can participate in activities such as conservation work. Family membership is encouraged so that children develop an ongoing interest in our heritage and its conservation.
A free monthly lectures series is organized by the Trust. Lectures held in the past include
Sigiriya the Oldest True Tourist Site in Asia by Dr Roland Silva, The Origins of Contemporary Popular Sinhala Music, Dr Tissa Abeysekera, Twentieth Century Paintings by Prof Senaka Bandaranayake, Earliest Photographic Records of Sri Lanka by Arch Ismeth Raheem.
The Trust organizes guided tours led by eminent experts. Completed tours include, Galle Fort with Ashley de Vos, Sirigiya with Dr Roland Silva, the City of Kandy with Professor Nimal de Silva, the Sinharaja rainforest with Gehan de Silva Wijeyratne, the ancient sites around Kurunegala andKalpitiya with Prof Roland Silva, Maha Saman Devale Ratnapura.
The Trust is also publishing a series of limited edition books on Sri Lanka’s culture and heritage. These include coffee table books on the Birds of Sri Lanka by Gehan De Silva Wijeratne, Heritage Buildings of Sri Lanka by Prof Nimal de Silva, Early Photographers of Sri Lanka by Arch Ismeth Rahim,
