Hayleys designs, builds mobile water treatment plant for Menik Farm

A mobile water treatment plant designed and custom built by the Hayleys Group has been deployed at Zone 5 of the Menik Farm camp, the company said. The initiative jointly funded by Hayleys and the One Sri Lanka Foundation, saw the construction of the water treatment plant under Puritas, the Hayleys Group’s waste water treatment arm.

Prof. Harendra De Silva of One Sri Lanka Foundation and Harsha Gunasena Chief Financial Officer- Fibre Cluster of Hayleys Group, switch on the Purification plant

Hayleys said in a statement the skid-mounted mobile water treatment system was capable of treating 50,000 litres of water per day. It added that it would be used to purify water supplied by the Malwathu Oya water supply and drainage board, at a level that would drinking.

The unit, pre-assembled by Puritas at its Wewelduwa facility permits the entire unit to be moved to another site if required. Funds for the construction of the treatment plant were provided by the Group as well as One Sri Lanka Foundation.

The statement quoted Colonel (Retired) Shantha de Mel, Zone 5 Commander of Menik Farm as saying, “a steady supply of safe drinking water is one of the most urgent needs.”

The Hayleys Group launched its relief efforts in April this year to provide drinking water, sanitation facilities, food and clothing to the displaced. Having initially deployed containers and flexi-tanks which supplied the camps with water, it also donated plastic storage tanks, water pumps, materials for the construction of temporary toilets, the statement said.
