“We are hoping to have the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for rugby by the first week of January. The likely President is Asanga Seneviratne who is also part of the Interim Committee. As such he will be attending the International Rugby Board (IRB) meeting to be held on November 30 in Dublin, Ireland,” said Chairman of the Interim Committee for Rugby, Dr. Maiya Gunasekera.
Minister of Sports Gamini Lokuge speaking to the Sunday Times said; “Yes we plan on having the AGM as soon as possible. There are some changes that have been made to the constitution which have to be ratified by the Attorney General. Once we receive his report, we will hold the AGM.”

Seneviratne when contacted said; “Yes I will be attending the IRB meeting in Dublin. My main aim is to convince the IRB to release the funds they normally give for the development of the game. I have been given an assurance that the AGM will be held in January. I want to inform the IRB about this and also try and convince them to send the individuals they normally send for training of not only the players but the coaches as well.”
Meanwhile the Carlton Rugby Sevens which is last event of the Asian Rugby Sevens Circuit will be held in the last week of November in Sri Lanka. Many analysts point out that the fact that Sri Lanka will be sans a number of key players who have been banned by Minister Lokuge and subsequently filed a case against him.
The Minister said; “Yes there is a case against me but nothing will detract from the glamour of the Carlton Rugby Sevens. With over a month to go for the event I can already tell you that seven to eight countries have confirmed their participation. And that number can only increase as we get closer to the event.” |
