Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) has a long history of providing for the higher education and training needs of the region.
The school on Margaret Street was built in 1844 as the heart of a network of schools that taught art, design, craft and architecture to the people at the centre of a world-wide manufacturing revolution.
Birmingham is now more than ever an investment centre for the arts and BIAD continues to play a leading role in producing high quality graduates for the industry. Our graduates are shaping the world as successful artists, designers and makers.
More than 270 courses are offered by more than 800 academic and support staff, including prominent researchers, authors and broadcasters.
In 2009, the Guardian newspaper ranked the faculty as one of the top ten centres for design education.
BIAD now comprises of five schools:
School of Art
School of Fashion, Textiles and Three Dimensional Design
Birmingham Centre for the Visual Arts
School of Jewellery
School of Visual Communication
These schools are located on five sites throughout the City of Birmingham. Our new faculty is currently being built in the city centre at a cost of over 160 million pounds.
