A portion of the bund of the Udamaluwewewa in Hanguranketa, has recently suffered a crack in its side with the result there is a constant seepage of water.
The wewa helps to irrigate about 400 acres of paddy land with its water and the incident has caused concern to farmers of the area. When the incident was first noted by farmers they got the sluice gate opened, but the waters continue to seep through the crack.
A few million rupees had reportedly been spent on effecting repairs to the bund recently. But it appears the repairs were not carried out satisfactorily by the engineering division as the bund had sprung a leak. This will create a problem before the next harvesting season comes along, say the farmers. |
