Residents of Hawa Eliya, in the Nuwara Eliya district, recently held an almsgiving to bestow merit on the country’s dead war heroes. The almsgiving was held to mark the first six months since the ending of the war in the North and East.
The Hawa Eliya residents hope the almsgiving would also help ease the many hardships they have been facing over the years. The villagers say they lack many amenities, and that the village has been neglected for more than two decades.
One good example of official neglect, they say, is a piece of land that was taken from the Ceylon Brewery for the purpose of building a government hospital. Nothing has been done, they say, and a pavilion on the property remains empty and unused. They say they would like to see the building put to some use, and that they have written to the relevant authorities asking that the abandoned building be converted into a community hall. |
