This tribute marks the 20th death anniversary of Colonel Dudley Fernando and the 24th death anniversary of his son, Major Milroy Fernando.
My Thaaththi was a soldier, and so was my brother. I grew up in a military family. My role models were my Amma and Thaaththi, Colonel Dudley Fernando, and my great brother, the late Major Milroy Fernando. My Thaaththi was a soldier in the true sense of the word.
Many nights friends would visit our home, and they represented every branch and every rank of the military. In my Dad and in those guests, I had my first glimpse of the dedication and commitment of those who serve.
They come from all walks of life, and from all parts of the country. Time and again, across the generations, these brave men have defended our country and kept us safe – in the dark of night, and far from home.
Every day, and especially on this day, I honour the men in uniform who serve our country and protect our freedom. We must remember that for every person in uniform there are loved ones who wait anxiously for their safe return home.
I am honoured that the military has played an important part in not just my personal life and career, but also in my sports career.
I am the proud son of a man who dedicated his life to his country, the military and his family. Especially important to me is the fact that he dedicated a son in the defence of our motherland, and I am a better person for it. Just as these brave men stood tall in the service of our country, we too must stand by and support the men in uniform and their families. Thank you, Thaaththi and Milo Aiyah, for all you did for us. I am proud of you.
“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
