Nihal Hubert Gunaratna (NHG) former head of leading law firm Julius & Creasy completed 50 years at the Bar on December 14. He was admitted and enrolled as a Proctor of the Supreme Court by Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court Nadarajah Sinnetamby on December 14, 1959.
In the early 70s’ by legislation, Advocates and Proctors came to be known as Attorneys-at-Law of the Supreme Court.
After completing his secondary education at S. Thomas’ College, Gurutalawa and Mount Lavinia, Mr. Gunaratne joined the Ceylon Law College in September 1955. He had the rare distinction of obtaining Class 1 Honours for the admission of Proctors being placed third, second and first in the Order of Merit in the Preliminary, Intermediate and Final Examinations respectively and was also awarded the Second Scholarship and First Scholarship in the Intermediate and Final Examinations.
After serving a short period from October 1959 at De Silva and Mendis, a leading law firm at the time where he had served his apprenticeship, he joined Julius & Creasy, the law firm founded in 1879 and which in its 125th Year in 2004 was named the most sought after law firm by the Nation’s leading LMD 50 Listed Companies. NHG was admitted as a partner in the centenary year 1979 and reached the zenith of his career by becoming its head on October 1, 2005.
Having served Julius & Creasy with dedication, distinction and honour for over four decades, Mr. Gunaratne retired as head of Julius & Creasy on December 31, 2007.
The son of late Dr. Hubert Gunaratna of Weligama, he is married with a son and daughter both living abroad. |
