D.S. Senanayake College Colombo 07 a trend setter among the education institutes in Sri Lanka celebrated its 43 rd Birthday on February 10, 2010 at the main college hall with the participation of many religious devotees, parents, children and well wishers with an all night "pirith ceremony" to invoke blessings on the school and bring peace to the nation. It was followed by an alms giving to the inmates at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital.
D.S. Senanayake College one of the premier educational institutes in Sri Lanka with a short span of history of 43 years was established on February 10 1967 under the stewardship of Mr. R.I.T. Alles. The school gained many achievements of excellence both in the academic and non academic fields, locally and internationally. It is proud as a truly multi ethnic, multi religious college which has proudly created an unblemished and prestigious record of excellence in academic, sport and community leadership of highly innovative and patriotic individuals to the motherland.
Pioneers behind these achievements are the founder Principal Mr. R.I.T. Alles and his successors. The present Principal is a great pillar to the current achievements of the school. Under the leadership of the present Principal Dr. Asoka Senani Hewage the school has benefited immensely. He was instrumental in carrying out many development projects of the school, namely the swimming pool, the gymnasium, the state-of-the-art computer room which are just a few.
The school won the Best Annual Report and Accounts Competition in 2009 jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and the Association of Accounting technicians of Sri Lanka. The school also gives a prominent place for Agriculture. In the programme "Api Wawamu Rata Nagamu" launched by the Ministry of Education for all schools in the island in 2008 D.S. Senanayake College was placed 1st in the Western Province and second all island among the National and other schools that participated.
The school is also engaged in corporate social responsibility projects. Recently the school donated a building for a needy school in Tissamaharama from the funds donated willingly by the parents and the Old Boys Association of D.S.Senanayake College for a needy cause.
The concept of global go green is inculcated in the minds of the students by bringing a green culture to the primary sector by launching the "Carbon Neutral Project" costing over 10 million scheduled to be completed by April 2010. It is the brainchild of our Principal Dr. Asoka Senani Hewage who took the initiative and drive to give the primary children a greener environment free of pollution from the inception of their school career.
This project will strive to inculcate the necessary values in the children to preserve the environment. The primary sector of the school which is categorized by the Ministry of Education as a model school in the island is headed by a highly refined, cultured, motherly care lady Mrs. Nishanthi Amarasooriya. Her tact, diplomacy and administrative qualities have been appreciated by the members of the staff and parents alike. Mrs. Nishanthi Amarasooriya who inculcated the duty to her staff to extend devotional and inspiring attention to the children by addressing them in kind words as "PUTHA" has been a noble task in upgrading the primary sector of the school.
The great success of D.S. Senanayake College is the rapid growth of the school in such a short period of 43 years. It is the joint commitment of the administration board, teachers, parents, students and Old Boys working together to achieve a common goal.
The grand vision of the school in the year 2020 includes an Old Boy occupying a leadership position in the UNO, producing a scientific inventor and probably an Olympic medalist.
The vision gives prominence to sports and science as essentials for the future. There is no such word as impossible in our school vocabulary says the Principal Dr. Asoka Senani Hewage.
Today we being a school with a short span of history of 43 years is one of the leading National schools in the island with a strict disciplined environment. So achieving our vision is a positive goal for us says the Principal.
