CIMA Spellmaster in search of the top 20

The Spellmaster, televised on Sirasa TV every Saturday at 6 pm has now reached an exciting stage, with the top 100 spellers now battling it out to reach the top 20. An initial pool of 2000 spellers which was pruned down to 100 is seen competing in 5 groups of 20 spellers each. Four winners from each group will be selected to make the top 20 who will compete in the finals for the title of Spellmaster.

The first of these 5 competitions took place at the Sirasa TV studio in Ratmalana and 20 very nervous contestants were seen seated on stage anxiously awaiting their turn to spell out a word, the bright lights and cameras didn't make it any easier for them.

This time around contestants were given the opportunity to pick their words. In the 1st round the contestants were required to spell 2 words and allowed a choice, where he/she could select from 5 categories made available - Science, Nature, Culture, General and Business. In the 2nd round contestants were given the opportunity to select a word out from a pool of 350 words, and the winners determined on their success in these rounds. The tension seemed to tell on many of the contestants who however performed well with a majority of them showing signs of having improved tremendously over the weeks.

Only 4 contestants could qualify to the top 20 and in a totally unexpected turn of events, at the end of the first 2 rounds, the 4 winners had been found. R.M.W.J.Bandara from Maliyadeva College Kurunegala did brilliantly getting all three words he selected spot on; the next competitor to qualify was S Chelvaniththilan from St.Patrick's College Jaffna. Prabhashi Manudhya Wickramasekara from Hillwood College Kandy surprised herself by getting the word "Chanterelle" correct, which she said she had never heard before, and secured a place for herself in the top 20. W.L.Chrishari Annette De Alwis from Good Shepherd Convent Kandy was the final student to be selected to the top 20.

At the end, these four ecstatic contestants said the competition depended on one's luck and continued to say it had improved their vocabulary immensely, thanking CIMA and Sirasa TV for organizing such a programme.
