The CID is to record a statement from Anoma Fonseka this evening amidst speculation it is linked to the alleged role she played in smuggling out a letter that was believed to have been written by detained General (retd.) Sarath Fonseka to the British television station Channel 4.
Ms. Fonseka told the Sunday Times an
officer from the CID had telephoned her to say that they wanted to record a statement from her.“I told the officer who called that I cannot go to the CID but instead gave them an appointment to meet me on Sunday evening,” she said.
Ms. Fonseka said she did not know why the CID wanted to question her.
Asked if she had herself given some comments to Channel 4, Ms. Fonseka denied she had done so.
This is the first time a statement is being recorded from Ms. Fonseka who is leading the election campaign of her detained husband.
Meanwhile the grandmother of the son-in-law of General Fonseka, 79-year-old Ellen Wimala Tillekaratne who was produced in court on Friday for allegedly harbouring Danuna Tillakaratna in her residence was released on bail.
The CID in a report to court said she had provided accommodation to Danuna who was evading arrest and she had thus committed an offence under Section 209 of the Penal Code. |
