UNP may disqualify its Moneragala list

The UNP is considering disqualifying its list of candidates for the Moneragala district at the April 8 general election, a senior member said yesterday. The party is consulting its lawyers before taking a decision, he said.

The Sunday Times learns that the party is also looking into the possibility of backing another independent group or a political party in the district.

“However consultations with the other UNF leaders will be made only after the legal consultations are concluded,” he said.

The Sunday Times learns that one of the parties considered for supporting is the Ape Jathika Peramuna (Our National Front) of which the secretary is a close ally of Mangala Samaraweera.

The dispute over the Moneragala district list arose after the district leader Ranjith Madduma Bandara allegedly interpolated the name of another candidate replacing the name of the candidate who was nominated by the party.

Tissa Kuttiarachchi whose name was reportedly deleted from the original list this week filed a fundamental rights application in an attempt to include his name on the list, but the petition was withdrawn.

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the fundamental rights petition challenging the nominations list of the UNF in the Moneragala district.

The Court said objections should have been raised with the Elections Secretariat soon after nominations closed during the one and half hour period allotted to raise such objections.
