A ballot paper found in the Ratnapura dump |
More than seven weeks have passed after marked ballot papers were found in the Ratnapura district following the presidential election and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is yet to make a breakthrough, the Sunday Times learns.
A spokesman for the Elections Department told the Sunday Times that investigations were handed over to the CID and the Department had not been informed of the progress of the probe.
Soon after the detection of the ballot papers, statements were recorded from relevant officials including the election staff.
Ratnapura Government Agent, H.W. Gunadasa who was returning officer said, since the CID had taken over the investigation he was unable to comment.
In this incident, 64 ballot papers which included 24 valid ballot papers marked for Gen (retd.) Sarath Fonseka were found near a garbage dump in the vicinity of the Ratnapura technical college.
Gen Fonseka produced the ballot papers before the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka who ordered an inquiry into the matter.
