Sri Lanka’s surfing community recently banded together to conceive The Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka (SFSL), an official governing body for the sport which will ensure its continued growth and success both locally and internationally.

The first Annual General Meeting of the new federation will take place in Arugam Bay from 18-24 June this year. The AGM is planned to coincide with another landmark event in Sri Lanka’s relatively long surfing history, the Sri Lankan Airlines Pro 6 Star WQS, the first international surfing competition to be held on our bright shores.
Peter Rob-o, Chief Advisor to the SFSL, says the new governing body aims to create the first surfing series in the country, develop existing surf clubs in the country while increasing membership to the SFSL, garner support through sponsorships, gain membership into the International Surfing Association (ISA) and bolster the hopes of local surfers by offering them the chance of joining a possible surfing national team which could create waves on an international platform.
Rob-o an Australian who was captivated by the local surf scene reveals that he was very impressed with the talent, motivation and surfing standard in the country even though they suffered from a dearth of surfing equipment or national organization. The chief fundraiser for the SFSL is Tim Tanton an Englishman who is part of Paddle4Relief an organization that has long provided support to the Arugam Bay area.
Currently the federation has not had its executive election and will only be ratified by the Sports Ministry after it concludes a probationary process.
However SFSL presently enjoys the fervent support of the SL Olympic Committee. SFSL can be reached at surfingsrilanka@gmail.com |
