The OpenArc Industrial Campus has made it possible for students with G.C.E. (O/L) qualifications and an aptitude for IT to obtain the BIT degree from the University of Colombo in three years without passing the G.C.E. (A/L) examination. A seminar to educate students and parents on this scheme will be held on May 2 at 10.00 am and May 3 at 4.00 p.m. at the OpenArc Industrial Campus.
So far, only the universities in foreign countries provided the opportunity for students who have secured good grades at the G.C.E.(O/L) examination to obtain degree qualification at an early age without studying for the G.C.E.(A/L) examination. The parents of these students had to spend vast amounts of money and, in the process; millions and billions Rupees worth of valuable foreign exchange was drained overseas. As the fees of degree courses are very high, this opportunity was limited to the children of upper class parents with financial strength to spend vast amounts of money.
Now, the OpenArc Industrial Campus has made it possible for Sri Lankan students to obtain the BIT degree qualification from the University of Colombo, renowned in the local and international IT field, with just one-third of the amount of money they have to spend for overseas universities. Through this scheme, it will be possible for upper class parents to save money on the education of their children and the middle class parents will be able to provide higher education for their children. The country will be saving a lot of valuable foreign exchange and the parents will be able to fulfil the educational and professional requirements of their children at a very high standard while giving them parental love, affection and protection.
This is a full time degree course with classes being held on all five days of the week. During the course period, students will be given institutional training targeting employment in the relevant field and students who complete the degree course successfully are assured of employment.
According to the existing normal educational pattern, students who have obtained good grades at the G.C.E. (O/L) examination with an aptitude and a liking for IT, can study for G.C.E.(A/L) examination in the Commerce, Science or Mathematics streams. After a study period of two years, those who get through the G.C.E. (A/L) examination with good marks will be selected to the university to follow the BIT degree course. It takes at least 3-4 years to complete the course and obtain the degree. Students will have to undergo ragging at the university and if the universities are closed down due to student unrest or any other reason, the course completion and obtaining the degree will be further delayed.
Students who are not selected to a university will have to follow a degree course in a local or an overseas education institute to realize their dreams of obtaining a degree qualification. It will take 3-4 years and will cost a great deal of money. In both these instances, the three subjects studied for G.C.E. (A/L) in whatever stream will not be relevant to the degree in IT.
According to the above facts, obtaining a degree by studying for the G.C.E. (A/L) examination, passing it with good marks and entering a university or not entering a university is a waste of time, money and energy. Following the path mapped out by the OpenArc Industrial Campus, the path of entering the degree course just after the G.C.E. (O/L) examination, one can be a Graduate before one is even 20 years of age and will be able to become a highly paid IT professional by the age of 25, without wasting time, money and energy.
