Sweet dreams, police tell beggars after nightmare

By Damith Wickremasekara

Police yesterday gave an assurance to Colombo beggars that they can sleep in the night without the fear of being killed. The assurance came following the arrest of a suspected serial killer who has killed three beggars in the night after robbing them of their money.

The alleged killer stone

“The beggars were highly disturbed and not sleeping at night. Some of them slept at a location in Bambalapitya while a few of them kept watch,” Wellawatte Police Chief W. M. Samarakoon said.

He said that after he met the beggars and gave them an assurance they had gone back to their usual places. Police have obtained more evidence to charge the man in custody with the killing of beggars.

Inspector Samarakoon said there was clear evidence to pin the suspect with the killing of one beggar while his footprints were found near the body of another beggar. He said the suspect had killed or attacked his victims by dropping a huge stone on their heads. The killings and attacks took place in Armour Street, Maradana, Mount Lavinia, Peliyagoda and Wellawatte within a two week period.

The suspect, a 62-year-old man from Matugama was arrested by the police who were in mufti. The suspect had come close to a group of beggars around 2 a.m. and suddenly run away when he found them awake, prompting the police to pounce on him and arrest him.
