Victory week to end with parade

The week long victory celebrations organized to commemorate the defeat of the LTTE will culminate with a three forces parade at the Galle Face Green on Thursday, May 20, where the men who fought in the battle will be given pride of place.

Also on show will be the military hardware that was used in the war along with the naval ships as well as aircraft adding to the grandeur of the celebrations.

The Government has also initiated several programmes to commemorate the day at a national level. All Government offices have been asked to fly the national flag during the week long celebrations which began on May 14.

Private sector organizations too have been asked to join in the event as a mark of tribute to the men and women who fought to defeat terrorism in the country.

A special ceremony has been organized at Parliament grounds in Kotte on Thursday afternoon where the tablets with the names of fallen war heroes has been inscribed and erected. This will be followed by an all night pirith chanting at the BMICH the same day.

Military camps across the country too will have their own ceremonies to remember the fallen men. Meanwhile the foundation stone will be laid for a care village for 228 fully disabled soldiers in Anuradhapura on May 20, Military spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe said. The V Day celebrations will be an annual event starting from this year.
