With the onset of the South-Western monsoon next week Sri Lanka will experience more thundershowers.
According to Meteorology Department Deputy Director S.R. Jayasekare, the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Galle, Matara, Puttalam and Kurunegala districts will receive heavy showers .
“We are expecting the South West Monsoon to set in on May 20. We believe the present warm weather condition may ease with a chilly breeze blowing inland especially in the south western coastal areas,” he said.
He added deaths caused by lightning had increased dramatically and the public should take measures to protect themselves. “Lightning activity is high during monsoon periods therefore the public should follow indoor and outdoor safety precautions,” he said.
He said that the recent heavy showers were a result of the pre-monsoon condition
The Sunday Times learns that 19 people had been killed by lightning since March, this year.
One death was reported after the recent heavy showers that damaged more than 100 houses and vehicles and flooded many areas around the island.
Thirty-five year old Ramaiah Udaya Kumar from Nuwara Eliya was the unfortunate victim of the bad weather.
According to the Disaster Management Centre, around 6,000 persons were affected by the floods with Colombo (especially Grandpass, Punchi Borella, Narahenpita, Grandpass, Fort, Bloemendhal, Slave Island, Armour Street and Maligawatte), Gampaha (especially Wattala), Nuwara Eliya and Kalutara being the worst affected areas.
