Sri Lankan mobile operator Mobitel recently announced that it would be sponsoring 0.facebook.com, a global initiative by social network Facebook to facilitate access to its network via mobile phones.

As per its sponsorship, Mobitel is offering its customers access to 0.facebook.com through "any mobile Web browser without incurring any data charges". It has further been indicated that this free-of-charge service could be available for as long as a year. This is according to a statement by the local mobile operator.

Importantly, the statement also noted that "[photos] posted on Facebook are only one click away from 0.facebook.com. To view a photo a person only needs to click on a link to the photo and they will be prompted that they are leaving 0.facebook.com. Standard data charges will apply when a person leaves 0.facebook.com to view photos".
