A Business Times email poll this week on a government decision to re-take part control of the gas business through Shell found most readers saying that private management should be brought in.
Readers -- asked whether the government should run the company if and when it secures 100% control – gave a resounding 73 % vote for handing it over to private management. Some 22 % said the government should run the business.
“Bring in private management otherwise it will end up like the CPC or CEB with inefficiency and being top heavy with government ministers and MPs making this entity an employment agency,” said one respondent.
Another respondent said the state ownership now being enforced gives wrong and contradictory signals if on one side the state wants the private sector to develop.
Gas industry sources said Laufgs is among other bidders for the Shell stake. Officials of some overseas LPG companies have also been in Sri Lanka considering this investment.
