More than 500 complaints of bribery and corruption waiting to be investigated

A total of 530 complaints have been lodged with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption since the Commission’s term expired on March 29, according to the Commission’s director general, Lakshmi Jayawickrema. No fresh investigations, however, can be initiated until new appointments are made to the Commission.

The complaints will be investigated only after the Commission becomes fully operational with the appointment of three new commissioners.

The Commission has three members, two of whom should be retired judges of the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeal, and the third should be experienced in crime investigation and law enforcement. The members are entitled to one five-year term of office.

Among those under consideration is retired Supreme Court Judge Nihal Jayasinghe, who is currently Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Since April, the Commission has filed 15 cases in the Magistrate’s Court, and nine in the High Court. It has filed five appeals and completed investigations into 241 pending cases. There were also six convictions and four acquittals during this period.
