Rs. 6 bn project to prop up schools in provinces

By Pushpakumara Jayaratna

The Education Ministry is to launch a Rs. six billion programme next year to boost standards at smaller schools in provinces, Minister Bandula Gunawardena said. He said the scheme, being implemented with World Bank assistance, was aimed at ensuring that such schools did not close down due to lack of enough support.

There are some 3,000 schools in the country with less than 1,000 students, the Minister pointed out.
His announcement came at a ceremony to felicitate people from all sectors who have contributed to the education sector in the North Western Province.

The ceremony, known as ‘Wayamba Adyapana Pranama’ was organised by the provincial Education Ministry. The scheme would provide funds to selected secondary schools that would be tasked with ensuring the progress of five to six smaller schools.

Mr Gunawardena said around 1,000 secondary schools would be brought under the project in January.
He said Rs 6 billion had already been approved for the project.
