A Rs. 10 stamp will be issued to mark Sri Lanka’s participation at the first ever Youth Olympics Games in Singapore. Nishanthe Piyasena, the Chef De Mission of the Sri Lanka team said that all arrangements have been made to launch this stamp and that the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Ministry of Sports backed by the National Philatelic Bureau has been supportive to release this stamp.

Hasintha Shashiranga

Nuwani Navodya

Indunil Herath

Speaking further Piyasena said that the NOC has informed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of this and were awaiting their blessings. Last week the Sunday Times started introducing the Sri Lanka team by featuring skipper Heshan Unamboowa, Madhawee Weerathunga (Swimmers), Dilshan Kariyawasam and Lakha Shehani (Badminton players).

This week we conclude introducing the participants with the remaining three competitors. Hasintha Shashiranga who only last week participated in the Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships in Thailand and overcame Amin of Iran 3-1 in the Under 18 category.

The results of the tournament are not encouraging as the under 18-boys team lost to Iran 1-3, Kazakhstan 0-3, India 0-3 and Thailand 1-3 and managed to beat Qatar 3-1.

Shashiranga hails from Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda and will feature in the Men’s Singles event. He was selected to the team by his super showing at the Continental Qualification event.

The other TT player to represent Sri Lanka is Nuwani Navodya also of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda. She will participate in the Women’s Singles. She has been selected to the team as a wild-card which is termed as a Universality Place given to nations who have shown good progress in the sport by the International Olympic Committee.

The Table Tennis events will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and the dates stipulated for the events are: August 21 to August 26. All eyes will undoubtedly be on Indunil Herath of Walala R. Rathnayake Central College Menikhinnam Sri Lanka’s only runner at the meet. Herath is a reputed 800 meters runner but unfortunately as the YOG does not have 800 metes in the events he is billed to run in the 1000 meters.

The lad has trained in this event dedicatedly and is keen to give a good account of himself at the meet. This event will take place at the Bishan Stadium from August 17 to 23. Because of his lack of participation in the 1000 metres, Indunil has been given Universality Place.

Sri Lanka’s team for the event will have seven officials headed by Chef De Mission Nishanthe Piyasena, Pemlath Uyanhewa (Swimming), Chathura de Silva (Table Tennis), Shimal Aponsu (Badminton), Susantha Fernando (Athletics), Donald Wijegunewardena (Masseur) and Dilmini Direckze (Lady Chaperone).

The Opening Ceremony of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) will feature the largest combination of different dance styles in a show. With more than 7,000 youth performers coming together to perform for a global audience at the Singapore 2010 Opening and Closing Ceremonies on 14 and 26 August respectively, the performances lined up for the ceremonies will include music, song, dance, mutimedia and special effects.
