American International School bags 17 Gold Medals from Australia!

The American International School (Dehiwela) held its first International Assessment, Australia awards ceremony on July 7 2010 at the school auditorium. This ceremony was held to celebrate the enthusiasm, commitment and hard work put in by their students and teachers, which enabled them to obtain 17 gold medals at the exams.

The event was graced by Her Excellency, Ms. Kathy Klugman, High Commissioner of Australia to Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest. It was also attended by Mr. Mohamed Sufian, Regional Consultant in Sri Lanka for Macmillan India Ltd., as the Guest of Honour.

Competing with students across 2631 schools in 16 countries empowered the young American International students to go way beyond what they might have seen themselves to be capable of…
Thus, nine American International School students who secured the highest grades across Sri Lanka in their respective subject areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Computer Studies were awarded 15 Gold Medals.

In addition, two Gold Medals were also awarded to one student for receiving the highest score in Mathematics and English for her grade among all participating students from the 16 Asian countries (Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Mauritius), giving the American International School the distinction of being one of the 68 schools out of 2631 schools to have a University of New South Wales gold medal winner.

These international Assessment exams test a variety of skills in English, Mathematics, Science and Computer Studies and gives the schools feedback on the students' strengths and weaknesses
In her welcome address, the CEO of the American International School, Mrs. Sherryn Yaseen said that "It is a time to celebrate excellence in academics, excellence in leadership, and excellence in personal character since these three attributes intersect and reinforce each other making our students dynamic and versatile individuals"

She also said that the students sat these exams using the knowledge and analytical skills learned in the classroom, which proved that the American International School maintained a very high standard of education which is second to none.

Mrs. Yaseen went on to thank all the teachers who provided the students with the opportunity to gain skills that increase the likelihood of success in exams such as this and in the fields and endeavours of their choosing, as well as the parents for their support without which it is more difficult for young people to achieve their potential… or to even become aware of their own special talents.

Her Excellency, Ms. Kathy Klugman said in her keynote address that the she is happy about the progress of the American International School and it is her pleasure to be at this event where the students of the American International School have achieved a remarkable feat.

Awards were also distributed to students who obtained High ,Distinctions, Distinctions and credit passes at these exams too. The awards ceremony was well-attended by parents and well-wishers.
