A rare toast was held for Queen Elizabeth of England this week at the 175th anniversary celebrations of George Steuarts Group, Sri Lanka’s oldest Mercantile firm held at the Hilton Colombo amidst a 6-course dinner and light oldies music.
Group Chairman Jayantha Wimalagunaratne toasted the President while Jt. Managing Director Dubsy Kanagaratnam toasted the Queen, continuing a tradition for companies set up during British colonial rule. The other Jt. Managing Director Duleep Daluwatte toasted the company and its staff.
British High Commissioner Peter Hayes, the guest of honour, said George Steuarts’ achievements were extraordinary for any company in the world.
He said a message sent by the Queen to mark the occasion showed the prestige which the company enjoyed. |
