Sri Lanka short of trained personnel for tourism boom

The country’s leisure industry is ill-prepared to meet the challenge of 2.5 million tourists target by 2016, noted Arnila Thambiyah, Joint Managing Director Renuka Hotels recently. Speaking at a press conference, she said the ideal requirement of workers to a tourist hotel is 4:1 which is yet to be met. The hotel schools and other training institutions are not capable of supplying the required personnel to meet this demand, she added.

During the past years due to the war situation many trained persons left the country in search of employment abroad. However the end of the war had brought in an unprecedented era of prosperity. With this in view the government has given full impetus to the development of the industry as this will create ample employment opportunities within the country.

“With investors coming in to the tourism sector a major requirement exists in terms of quality manpower for these resorts. Cross Boarder Academy (Pvt) Ltd. together with Wissen Academy Singapore and Renuka Hotels has taken the initiative to provide quality training in the categories of Food and Beverages, Cookery and Front Office.

Targeting youth from both low and middle income families the study courses are priced at very affordable rates with easy payment terms and no hidden charges. As a part of the service Cross Boarder Academy guarantees its successful candidates employment,” said Yatila Wijemanne, Managing Director, Cross Border Academy.
