Maris Stella College knocked Royal College off their home perch, to clinch the trophy for the Invitation Schools Athletics Relay Carnival, held yesterday at the Royal College grounds in Reid Avenue.
The boys from Negombo finished with a tally of 149 points, comfortably ahead of the hosts Royal who notched up 113 points.

Maris Stella made their decisive move in the 4x400 events; where they went on to win the race in the Under 15, 16 and 17 age groups. However, they were denied a complete sweep of the event when St. Peter’s College swooped down and whizzed through to victory in the under 18 4x400 relay.
For the girls it was Visakha Vidyalaya who ran home with the overall championship, racking up 98 points to brush past St. Lawrence’s Convent who had scored 86.
However the standout race in the girl’s segment, the under 16 4x 200 relay, was not one dominated by Visakha. The event was quite literally a two horse race between Methodist College and Ladies College, with each school swapping the lead at each baton exchange. Initially the first sprinter from Ladies had a sizable lead over the rest of the field, but she suddenly lost her balance, bringing about a momentary lapse in momentum which handed the advantage to her closest chaser from Methodist College.
The two schools were within a stone’s throw of each other when the baton was handed to the final group of four. It was then that Methodist College made their move, with their sprinter darting past her rival from Ladies to cross the line with a timing of 2 minutes 2 seconds.
The one day invitational meet featured action between Royal College, Maris Stella, St. Peter’s College, Ananda College, St. Joseph’s College and Nalanda College in the boys’ group, while action in the girls’ bracket involved Visakha Vidyalaya, Ladies College, St. Lawrence’s Convent, Museaus College, Methodist College, St. Bridget’s College and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya. |
