Throughout its relatively long and storied history, the students from the Buddhist Ladies College have always driven themselves towards extracurricular achievement. This year this determination has steadily begun to bear fruit, as the school has not only excelled at athletics and netball but also introduced a number of far ranging sports such as Karate, Badminton and Table Tennis.
Nevertheless Athletics still features prominently as one of the school's marquee sports, with netball coming in a very close second. The past year alone has seen many of BLC's students produce greatly gratifying results in two major national athletic championships.
One of these was the Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championships which took place earlier in the month. BLC swept through this tournament snatching a final tally of six medals. They also took home the trophy for the under 15 age group.
One of the leading components that catapulted them towards this achievement was the strong arm of young Zeenath Imthiaz. Zeenath trounced her competitors in the Put Shot event by launching the metallic sphere a record breaking 9.16 meters in the Junior Championships. She also went on to claim gold medals for the Javelin Throw and the Discus events in the same competition.
In action at the All Island Athletics Championships, Zeenath went on to once again stamp her seal of dominance over the Put Shot event, calmly walking home with the under 15 championship. As mentioned above, BLC also enjoys greatly laudable success in the sport of Netball, frequently emerging as a firm contender in many of the major national tournaments. So far this year they have won the circuit championships in the under 15 and under 17 age groups.
The school authorities put this success down to the enthusiasm displayed by all their students when participating either at a national or at a school meet. Currently a number of extra curricular activities such as Badminton, Table Tennis and even Swimming are only now blooming as sports in the school, and as the years progress the administration is confident that results will emerge.
"We provide all our students with the adequate facilities for nearly all sports. In the school itself we conduct training for Netball, Karate and Table Tennis. So we provide an opportunity for all our sportsmen to progress and do well," one administrator points out.
At the moment the school says that plans for construction of sporting facilities have been put on hold as they are focused on the more immediate need of expanding the school's academic infrastructure. However that will not stop any of BLC's athletes from working towards their alma mater's motto of striving, 'the utmost for the highest'. |
