The United National Party (UNP) launched its “Graama Charika” from Horana yesterday. The programme is a bid to revive the UNP voter base in the rural parts of the country.

The inaugural meeting began with religious activities at the Poorwaramaya, in Horana, with UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and Members of Parliament Mangala Samaraweera and Ajith Perera in attendance.
In a speech, Mr. Jayasuriya called for a concerted and consistent effort to have former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka released from jail. He said nepotism had taken hold in all areas, and that only the Rajapaksas were prospering, while the ordinary people were suffering with the rising cost of living.
He said one of the aims of the UNP programme was to give relief to the people in whatever way possible. “This is the first step in a process that will see the UNP securing electoral victories at future elections,” he said.
Mr. Jayasuriya condemned the way the government was dealing with university unrest, saying the UNP would address such issues through the “graama charika”. |
