The three-member team that inquired into the derailing of the Bangadeniya office train between Puttalam and Palavi, concluded that it was irresponsibility on the part of the Thalawila Station Master and the signalman that caused the derailment, a railway official said.
The engine of the train that left Colombo at 5 pm on Thursday (28), derailed close to Thalawila station around 9 pm, when the signalman changed track suddenly, without warning. However, whether the signal unit itself was faulty is yet to be ascertained.
The engine is said to be over 50 years old, but in good running condition. The damage to the tracks and the engine is yet to be estimated, though the track was repaired by yesterday. The delay was due to the late arrival of the crane. The train was brought back to Colombo yesterday.
