Await rock ’n roll the Smokie way

By Ranjit Vethakan

More than 200 performances per year is a hectic schedule for any singer or band of any calibre or genre. But the punishing workload of more than a decade only proves Smokie’s popularity. The English outfit is well into its fourth decade. and plays its long anticipated first-ever concert on Sri Lankan soil on Tuesday, November 30, in the Grand Ballroom of Water’s Edge.

The quintet is currently in Perth, having already played three other gigs in and around the West Australian capital city as part of their 18-concert tour Down Under. It’s quite common for personnel in successful aggregations to move on , but local fans can be satisfied with the knowledge that Mike Craft (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick McConnell (lead guitar, vocals), Terry Uttley (a founding member on bass, vocals), Steve Pinnell (drums) and Martin Bullard (keyboards), have been together as a quintet since 1996.

The near-two-hour performance here will be packed with rock ‘n roll gems: while their own high-profiled, quality ditties like Living Next Door To Alice, Mexican Girl, Lay Down In The Arms Of Someone, Needles And Pins, I’ll Meet You At Midnight, Don’t Play Your Rock ‘n Roll To Me, Little Flirt, and Oh Carol, to name but a few will get a thorough workout, Smokie is also renowned for their own versions of Hits of other acts.

In addition to more than a dozen entries into the Top Ten around the globe, Smokie has sold well in excess of 20 million albums around the world. That’s not counting the more than 10 million sales of their all-time great signature tune, Living Next Door To Alice!

The concert is a proud presentation of Water’s Edge and is supported by the Sunday Times and the Daily Mirror as Print Media sponsors. YES FM and MTV Channel 2 are the electronic media partners.
