Shaminda Jay arrives with the future shades of Sri Lankan pop music

Releases his debut album ‘kelle’ with m – entertainments

Shaminda Jay recently marked his entry to Sri Lankan music arena with the release of his debut music album ‘kelle’. Shaminda a lyricist, composer and a singer who creates his songs in Sinhala Pop Music which was at the peak of popularity in the 70s, hopes to keep the style alive among the present generation through his novel music productions.

All the songs in the album are penned and composed by Shaminda himself. Leading musicians from the western music industry in the likes of Derek Wickremenayake, Billy Fernando and Suresh de Silva have done music arrangements for many of the songs.

A product of Royal College, Shaminda is involved in advertising as a professional writer while making his creative contribution towards music. Having played significant roles in the College musical activities, after stepping into advertising Shaminda has written and composed many jingles for prominent brands in the country.

The songs of the album are written in a simple language pattern and many of them are based on love and lust. The album presents a collection of pop songs which have been done in country & western, reggae, twist and Sri Lankan Baila styles.

A keen follower of legendary musician Clarence Wijewardene, Shaminda had this to say about ‘kelle’, his first album. ‘Actually I did these songs over a few years and finally decided to release an album with m- entertainment. From the early days I loved Sinhala Pop music and I was regularly exposed to creations of C.T. Fernando, M.S. Fernando, Desmond Rodrigue, Gypsies and Clarence in particular.

After the 80s there has been a downturn in this style because of the lack of new creations. So I thought to create some new songs myself and help take Sinhala Pops to the new generation. ‘kelle’ is the initial part of that effort.’’

The album ‘kelle’ is produced and marketed by m-entertainments and is available in all leading music stores. Contact Shaminda Jay through 0778 153216 or shamindajay@gmail.com.
