A child psychologist who was asked to examine a controversial sex education textbook in circulation at an international school in Colombo has submitted her report to the Additional Colombo Magistrate, Dulanie Amarasinghe.
The psychologist, Dr. Priyanjali Soysa, of the University of Colombo, handed in her report on Wednesday. The matter will be taken up in the same court tomorrow.
The book in question, “Introducing Moral Issues”, by Joe Jenkins, has provoked an outcry from several quarters and prompted action by the Ministry of Education and the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA). The book, which is circulated among Year Six students at the Colombo International School (CIS), contains adult material and, among other things, describes the use of sex aids and contraceptives
NCPA chairperson Anoma Dissanayake says the book should never have been circulated among 11- and 12-year-olds. |
