While the weather might be gloomy and discouraging, it certainly won’t cast a shadow over the Christmas spirit. The interact clubs of Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya, are spreading Christmas cheer by presenting ‘Feliz Navidad’; a Carnival of games, live music, food and shopping stalls. Bands performing at the concert include The Doobies, Viraga Perera, Flick of a Switch, Cynosure, Gravity, the Royal College Choir and more.
Feliz Navidad is an interact club community service project organised by the two schools.
The project is part of a larger initiative known as ‘Fun-Duh-Mental’ that has successfully pushed into its fourth year. The objective of Fun-Duh-Mental is to reach out and assist in areas that are most often overlooked, explains Samudhra Jayasinghe, Co-Chairperson of the
project. “Each year we take on a different project and this year we’ve chosen Mulleriyawa Mental Hospital”, she elaborates. “Most of the patients at the hospital have disowned by their family so when they recover they haven’t got any place to go. The hospital is building houses for these people to live in and that’s what we’re helping them with as the proceeds will go into the furnishing and the up keep of their lodging”.
Previous projects carried under the Fun-Duh-Mental initiative, include raising funds to rehabilitate child prostitutes and creating awareness about the issue, as well as collecting funds for and renovating the deaf and blind school in Ratmalana.
Be part of Feliz Navidad to indulge in the Christmas spirit and help the ‘Mulleriyawa Mental Hospital’ project. The carnival will take place at Part Street Mews at 5pm and continue till 10:30pm on December 21. Tickets are priced at Rs. 400 and will serve as a coupon for a snack, game and entrance to the concert. |
