There’s a lively buzz in the University of Colombo as it gears up for the musical extravaganza of the season. Organized by the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Science, ‘Esperanza 2010- chords for a cause’ will lighten up the Colombo music scene with its energetic vibes on December 18.
‘Esperanza 2010’ is the brainchild of members of one of the most dynamic clubs in the University of Colombo. Since its inception 8 years ago, the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Science has been a major force in raising the quality of the University graduate. This year, they are taking a new direction and doing their part for society. Staying true to its meaning of ‘hope’ in Spanish, ‘Esperanza’ will fund the club’s new community development project - Project Senehasa.
Project Senehasa was inspired by the Senehasa Education, Resource, Research and Information Center (SERRIC), an initiative of the Sri Lanka Army in its effort to assist the families of war heroes whose children need special care, and now open to everyone. SERRIC provides the education and awareness required to integrate these children to society. With over 10% of the Sri Lankan population in need of special care education these centres offer a lifeline to the differently abled children and their families. With Project Senehasa, the Faculty of Science Rotaract Club hopes to provide much needed books and software for the children’s library. The students of the Faculty of Science will also offer their talents and efforts by providing SERRIC with the data analysis services and hosting public awareness programmes. ‘Esperanza 2010’ will provide a colourful platform to bring this vision a reality.
The biggest musical event of the season will stay true to the seasonal spirit by being an event of fun and enjoyment done with the compassion for humanity in mind. Names like Bhathiya and Santhush, Nemesis, Billy Fernando and Battery that lead the Sri Lankan music scene will come together on December 18, at the Bishop’s College Auditorium for this worthy cause. |
