Cultures and their values have evolved for centuries, growing with the progress in civilization. Today, the world is studded with cultures and their colourful presence, in a world of diverse human traditions. Despite the diversity, one will always witness a unity and harmony in cultures, where one blends and mixes with the other. A " Cultural Harmony " is what Wycherley was bent on exposing to the audience that was present at their Cultural Day on February 15 which went on the boards at the Bishop's College Auditorium.
Wycherley is a blend of multi national, multi racial, multi religious and multi cultural facets. The students simply merge into the traditions of each other, respecting that of one another and their speciality. This was so evident in the items that went on stage with clockwork precision.
To those who were not present on this occasion, it is worth while going down "Memory Lane" in retrospect of the items that were staged.
After an observance of 2 minutes silence to honour the 3 Armed Forces and the Police for the sacrifices they made, the programme commenced with the rendition of " Uthama Charya " which touched every heart that was listening. The little ones of the Elementary Section stepped in reverence to a Thala Rangana in their "Pooja Dance", paying obeisance to the deities at the commencement of the show - with music that defined the sanctity. Their presentation of " Dance of the Rhythm " which was based on the traditional Bharatha Natyam was not only rhythmic but showed a blend of perfect contrasting colours.
The Primary Section presented "Dance of Nature Admiration", "No Strings Attached", "By Gone Days of Veddhas" and "If You Know The Notes to Sing", all well costumed to suit each item and well choreographed. Much time and trouble had gone into the selection of costumes and training over a 100 students.
The students of Grade 6 - 8 presented a range of items from "Cha - Cha - Cha", "Raban Dance", "Malaysian Melody" and "Hanuma Wanama" which all brought out a taste of culture and tradition of Sri Lanka and our multi-ethnic society to the occasion. To taste the difference, the High School and Junior School Choir rendered a wonderful performance in singing " This Little Light of Mine " - blending in perfect harmony.
The students of the Senior School worked on a mixture of items that stretched from Bharatha Natyam to Latin Dances, Hindi Jazz Ballet, Hip - Hop and Korean Dances which all went to show that Wycherley believes in a fusion of cultures - both oriental and occidental.
"Cultural Harmony" came to an end when all the students who were the main players showed themselves on stage together - A Happy Band of over three hundred students. It was a heart warming sight of students from Elementary to Senior School bonding together as one batch of children.
This country needs to be built to forge ahead on a harmonious note. The students of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Wycherley is always on the path to make our students the leaders of a united Sri Lanka. That's exactly what " Cultural Harmony " will do for society, for " Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me " is the dictum that we follow at Wycherley.
