More than 70 complaints of election related violence were reported on election day (Thursday, March 17) and during the post election period, Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said.
He said there were reports of threats and intimidation from Nawalapitiya, Beruwala, Akkaraipattu, Nuwara Eliya, Kelaniya and Nikarawetiya.
“Some political party supporters were seen issuing leaflets to people before they cast their votes in the areas of Hambantota, Ratnapura, Puttalam and Anuradhapura,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.
He added that state property including Government bungalows and vehicles and human resources were misused on election day as well as during the pre election period.
“There were instances when the government blatantly used state media for election propaganda,” Mr. Hettiarachchi charged.
