The Thomians whose confidence must have been quite high after last week’s win were annihilated by a spirited Anthonian side by 63 points (4 goals, 7 tries) to 13 (2 penalties and a converted penalty try) at Nittawela last evening.

At times it resembled a practice session with the Anthonian backs and forwards combining to unleash wave upon wave of attacks on the Thomian defense. To the latter’s credit, they soaked up some of the pressure, but not all.
Things got a bit absurd when a Thomian defender kicked the ball backwards hoping to send it to the dead ball area; instead an Anthonian fell on the ball to score.
D.L. Tharanga caught the defense off their guard when he took a short tap and sprinted through around twenty-five yards to score.
Number eight Sankha Rajaguru had a terrific game, scoring three tries. He was simply unstoppable.
Winger D.L. Ariyapala, who showed a good turn of speed, weaved in and out of the defense, brushed a few tackles off and ran around to touch down.
Winger Laheer, flanker Ali and lock S.K. Rajindran were the other scorers. Tharanga and SD Dayan put over the conversions.
Had more conversions been put over and had the winners cut down on selfish play, a final tally in the eighties would have been the outcome.
The Anthonians led 32-6 at Lemons and almost doubled that tally. The Thomians paid dearly for not marking their men. At times, the Anthonian wingers ran unopposed. The visitor’s didn’t bargain for the overlap.
