The fifth annual Battle of the Golds rugby encounter between D.S. Senanayake College and Mahanama College will be played at the Royal College Sports Complex today.
The match will kick off at 4.00pm.
Though the performances of both teams in the current season has not been as expected in the Under-20 inter-schools Division I ‘B’ league rugby tournament, the keenly contested traditional encounter will give both teams the much needed boost for the remainders of the season.
Mahanama has been the dominant force in this encounter as they have continued to outclass their traditional rivals during the four previous meetings. With a strong and well-balanced team they will be hoping to retain the Golds trophy for the fifth consecutive year. D.S. Senanayake is captained by Avinka Abeysekara and Roshan Bandara leads the Mahanama XV.
The Battle of the Golds encounter has become a permanent rugby fixture as well as the cricket ‘big match’ between the two schools. This encounter has attracted many old boys from both schools during the past years and is expected to generate more spectators this year.
