There are many reasons why schools in Sri Lanka, and worldwide, choose to offer Cambridge programmes and qualifications. One of these is our student-centred approach. A Cambridge education goes beyond purely learning facts, but instead develops learners who are able to engage with their subject and apply their understanding in many contexts. Together with schools, we aim to develop learners who are confident, responsible, innovative and engaged.
University of Cambridge International Examinations offers four stages of education for learners aged 5-19 years: Cambridge Primary, Cambridge Secondary 1, Cambridge Secondary 2, and Cambridge Advanced.
Schools can offer every stage of a Cambridge education, or just parts of it. In Sri Lanka, the first school to offer a full Cambridge education from primary to secondary level was Wycherley International School. As each stage of a Cambridge education builds on the previous stage, students follow a coherent study path from their first day at school to their last.
Our Cambridge Primary and Cambridge Secondary 1 programmes develop skills and knowledge in core areas of the curriculum. We have recently redeveloped both programmes, adding some great new features. These include a new English as a second language curriculum - to complement the existing curriculum frameworks for English, Mathematics and Science - which focuses on developing skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.
Both Cambridge Primary and Cambridge Secondary 1 include progression tests and externally marked assessment options (Cambridge Checkpoint and new Cambridge Primary Checkpoint) to help teachers monitor learners' progress and direct teaching where it's needed most. By identifying learners' strengths and weaknesses - individually and as a group - teachers can tailor their programmes and prepare learners for successful progression to the next stage of their education. It is also very helpful for parents to receive detailed information about their child's progress.
At the end of the Cambridge Secondary 2 and Cambridge Advanced stages, learners can obtain globally recognised qualifications like Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level and Cambridge International AS and A Levels. These qualifications are internationally benchmarked and accepted by employers and universities around the world as evidence of academic achievement.
They develop key skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving, and foster a global outlook.
Every year thousands of students with Cambridge International AS and A Levels win places at good universities worldwide, including universities in the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Cambridge International AS and A Levels are renowned for developing the skills and knowledge that universities value, such as the ability to think and study independently and make links between subjects. They prepare students for success at university.
We are committed to working closely with Cambridge schools in Sri Lanka. We want to help schools build a curriculum that reflects their own values, and support them in delivering the best education possible to Cambridge learners.
