South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) has launched its ambitious expansion drive with the foundation stone laying ceremony held on June 4, presided over by its visionary chairman Prof. Neville Fernando. The new building, is in very close proximity and opposite SAITM main campus building, at Millennium Drive, Malabe, is primarily to house the rapidly expanding Faculty of Engineering, Medicine, Business studies and IT with provision made for additional laboratory and workshop space for research activities.
The 162,000 sq.ft new building, located in a picturesque setting of 7 acre land, once completed is to cater to 3000 full-time students from four faculties i.e. Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Management and Finance and Faculty of Media and Communication in addition to Faculty of Engineering and IT, with a host of new degree and diploma programmes on offer. SAITM has already drawn up plans to introduce degree programmes in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Nursing, Hospitality and in other high demand fields, keeping very much in mind the expectation of the students and their parents, not only in Sri Lanka but in the South Asian region as well.
The project will include a modern sports complex with a swimming pool, state of the art gymnasium and playground for indoor and outdoor sports and will be equipped with a spacious cafeteria and an ample common recreational space. Keeping in line with the green campus concept, which SAITM vigorously follow, the new building complex will adhere to sustainable principles in construction and operation with minimum energy utilization, harvesting rainwater and preserving a green and healthy environment.
On the direction of Professor Neville Fernando, the chairman, the faculty of engineering is actively participating in the project with engineering students granted permission to access the site for monitoring the work and gain hands-on experience. With the completion of the new building complex, SAITM will certainly become the largest non-state sector university campus in Sri Lanka offering immense opportunities to the youth of tomorrow and producing young men and women with world-class education with character.
