Every year the British Council in Sri Lanka delivers over 72, 000 exams to 33,000 candidates that aspire to achieve UK qualifications. The organisation conducts a range of exams in Sri Lanka including IELTS, Cambridge ESOL, Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) GCE, Edexcel GCE and a variety of professional examinations such as ACCA, ABE and BCS. These exams are presently conducted in Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Matara, Negombo, Batticaloa and Jaffna.
At a recent event, the British Council highlighted the growing need for UK qualifications in Sri Lanka, while commending the staff behind the administration of these exams.
"UK qualifications make a key contribution to the role of the British Council in Sri Lanka in creating opportunities for Sri Lankans worldwide. The exams support teams are valuable stakeholders who help us do this", said Kishore Roy, former Country Examinations Manager, at the event which was attended by 175 examiners, supervisors, invigilators, and staff members of the exams unit.
Recognising the demand for UK qualifications in Sri Lanka, Mr. Roy said, "Sri Lanka holds the largest membership outside the UK for BCS and ABE, and is the sixth largest examinations department in the British Council global network".
The current Country Examinations Manager, Harriet Gardner, who recently took over from Kishore Roy, said, "UK qualifications play a significant role in building trust and relationships between the UK and Sri Lanka. The strength and the spirit of the British Council examinations team are very encouraging."
