The HELP University campus located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur is part of the multi- campus development of the HELP Group. Elaborating more on this purpose-designed campus which offers a range of innovative academic, professional and vocational programmes, Dorothy Chen Yen, Assistant Manager, International Marketing, HELP University College, Malaysia during a recent visit to Sri Lanka said that "the university college enables students to enjoy the benefits of living and learning in the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, with access to excellent facilities and top professional expertise.
By pursuing their tertiary education at HELP students can obtain an internationally recognized degree for a fraction of the cost." She also noted that the campus which is among the top private universities in Malaysia has grown to become a reputed educational institution with top rated partners such as the University of London, University of Manchester, Northumbria University, Hertfordshire University, UK and the Normandy Business School, France providing students a gamut of educational options to choose from. "HELP, is a public listed company that has partnerships with over 100 universities in the US, Australia, and New Zealand. We have a student population of about 12,000 and 20% of them are international students. There are two campuses at HELP which provide both the 4+ 0 American Degree Programmes and 3+ 0 UK Degree programmes. At HELP, we don't just focus on academic excellence but we also stress on inculcating qualities like sharing, caring and compassion towards others. We also encourage students to engage themselves in social work," she highlighted.
Making her observations about Sri Lankan students and their educational preferences she noted "Business and Law are the most popular disciplines among Sri Lankan students. Ever since HELP University College ventured into Sri Lanka, we've been received with interest by local students; most of them being keen to pursue the UK programmes offered by us."
The Law Olympiad 2011 - Learning the Ropes through Esprit de Corps (Team Spirit)Dorothy also went on to explain more about the Sri Lanka HELP University College Law Olympiad 2011, which will be held on the 15th October 2011, in partnership with Seekers Worldwide, Sri Lanka at the British School auditorium for the second successful year.
"The Law Olympiad, is aimed at inculcating analytical and critical thinking skills among students, and is organized by HELP University College's Faculty of Law which is affiliated with prestigious universities in the UK such as Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cardiff, West of England, Bristol, Aberystwyth, Hertfordshire and Northumbria. The inaugural Law Olympiad that was held during September last
year was very successful, with advance levels students from 13 schools participating including two schools from Jaffna" she explained. Describing the Law Olympiad and its basic composition Dorothy explained "the competition doesn't require the students to have a specialized knowledge in law, reasoning or other law related skills.
The competition has 4 games which are 'Whodunnit', 'Trivia quiz', 'What's Your Verdict' and 'Best Alibi/Best Plea'. The criteria used in adjudicating the games are based on general knowledge; and teams are expected to exhibit logical thinking in their answers and not knowledge of the law.
By participating in the competition, the participants have the opportunity to hone their analytical thinking skills and general knowledge in an intellectually stimulating environment, whilst at all times enjoying themselves. The competition also promotes camaraderie among the participants."
Last year's winning team from Ladies' College Colombo received valuable scholarships based on their outstanding performance, and according to Dorothy this year's top scoring team too will be offered a 50% reduction on their tuition fee, for a three- year degree program at HELP University College.
She also noted that due to the high level of intelligence shown by the Sri Lankan students at last year's competition, the organizers have decided to increase the number of participating schools to about 30, which includes government, private and international schools. The second Sri Lanka Law Olympiad is scheduled to be held on October 15th 2011, at the British School Auditorium.
The British School in Colombo Deputy Principal Mr Simon Harwood said the British School is delighted to welcome participating students representing their schools from Colombo and around the country. He added that the participating teams meet in an atmosphere of fellowship, academic and personal endeavour in an an opportunity to strive for collective and individual excellence, values that typify the ethos of the host school. The British School in Colombo hosts this event in its state-of-the-art Auditorium which ranks as one of the finest in Colombo.
