Battling it out at the Robogames

It’s robot vs. robot at the ‘2011 Robogames Competition’! The event was staged for the 4th consecutive year, with the Information Technology and Communications Engineering Sectional Committee of the IESL working in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), University of Moratuwa and TechCERT, a division of the LK Domain Registry.

This week, the final event will be held at the Computer Science and Engineering Department, at the University of Moratuwa on October 26 from 9.00 am onwards. An interesting development in this year’s Robogames is the never before presented challenge to the open and undergraduate category.

Competitors faced off in three separate categories: school, undergraduate and open. Workshops conducted prior to the event had 10 undergraduates belonging to the Robogames organizing crew of the Computer Science and Engineering Department teaching introducing amateur enthusiasts to robot technology around the country.

Various workshops were held in schools as well and included Kingswood College (Kandy), Royal College (Colombo), Rahula College (Matara) and Dharmasoka College (Ambalangoda). Workshops focused on improving general awareness of robotics and electronics among school children, while undergraduate and open workshops were held at the University of Moratuwa and were for the benefit of older students.

The winners that day were Team Foretell, made up of students from Maliyadeva College and St. Anne’s College, Kurunegal; Team Track-Pro with students from St. Thomas’s College, Bandarawela and Team E-Dudleys from Central College, Tholangamuwa.

The competition advanced from simple path following robots to advanced robotic soccer which requires video processing, wireless communication and artificial intelligence. Teams from the University of Moratuwa, University of Ruhuna, University of Peradeniya, Uwa wellassa University, University of Colombo, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, SLIIT, Informatics Institute of Technology are expected to compete in the finals.
