‘Bambara Walalla’ wins SIGNIS Salutation

Athula Liyanage’s maiden cinematic direction ‘Bambara Walalla’ won most of the gold awards including for direction, script, music, editing and year’s most esteemed cinematic creation at the 35th SIGNIS cinema awards. Recognizing most artistic talents 2010, SIGNIS (OCIC/UNDA) Salutation for creative cinema and tele dramas for 2010 was held at the BMICH last week under the patronage of His Eminence Cardinal Dr. Malcom Ranjith.

In tele section, teleplays “Eberthu Etha” and “Yasa Isuru” produced by the National Rupavahini Corporation received majority of the awards. Winning the majority of awards for “Bambara Walalla”, its director Athula Liyanage received the award for the Best Director while Mahendra Perera was adjudged the Best Actor for his performance in “Bambara Walalla”.

Among the other awards won by ‘Bambara Walalla’ were creative art direction for Manjula Ayagama and Athula Liyanage, Creative sound for Aruna Priyantha Kaluarachchi, creative music for Kasun Kalhara, creative editing Ajith Ramanayake, creative cinematography for Trisula Deepa Tambavita, creative acting (male) for Mahendra Perera and creative supporting acting (male) Sriyantha Mendis.

Among the other awards the Best Actress was Damitha Abeyratne for performance in ‘Dakina Dakina Mal’ and supporting acting (female) for Jayani Senanayake for role in ‘Shuthi Newatha Enna’ and make up for Priyantha Dissanayake in ‘Ira Handa Yata’.

Three international awards were presented to Sanath Gunathilaka, Roy De Silva and Charitha Priyadharshanee Pieris in the salutation in which Ven. Rambukkana Sidhartha thero, Rev. Fr. Benedict Joseph, Minister T B Ekanayake were among the other guests.

Awarding teledrama direction, Nilantha Pradeep Kumara and G. D. Nandasena won a silver awards for sound direction and creative make-up for ‘Ebarthu Etha’. Gaya Ramya Alwis won the award for the best lyrics for ‘Yasa Isuru’, Sasanka Deepal Amaraweera was awarded for the innovative theme of the “Isuru Bhavana”. The Silver award for the best supporting actor was received by Suminda Sirisena for his role in “Eberthu Etha”. Madani Malwattage received an award for the Best Supporting Actress. Saman Lenin and Ishani Ranganatha received awards for their singing in “Yasa Isuru”. Ananda Abeynayaka and Anuruddha Jayasinghe received awards for “Sansare Piya Satahan” and “Maya Ru” respectively.

Donald recognized for assistant direction

Donald Jayantha who has assisted most number of films in Sri Lankan cinema was recognized for his contribution at the SIGNIS Salutation 2011.

Donald’s recognition at the SIGNIS (OCIC/UNDA) Salutation is the first such award given to an assistant director in Sri Lankan cinema. He was awarded the Creative Assistant Director- copper at the award ceremony.
