The Government is bringing in provisions for a pension scheme for private sector and state corporation employees through the passage of the Employees Trust Fund and Employees Provident Fund amendment bill to be taken up in parliament shortly, official source said.
This amendment bill has provision for a social security insurance scheme or a pension scheme for employees, confirmed Labour Relations and Productivity Promotion Minister Gamini Lokuge responding to a query from the Business Times.
But he noted that the government will not re-introduce the private sector pension bill which was withdrawn in June this year due to protests of Free Trade Zone workers, though official sources said the proposed scheme is also contributory like the earlier controversial one which was reportedly abandoned. General Secretary- Free Trade Zones & General Services Employees Union of Sri Lanka, Anton Marcus told the Business Times that they are willing to discuss with the government a pension scheme for the private sector but not about a pension fund. He expressed his willingness to cooperate with the government, provided that it considers “suggestions of trade unions and other relevant forces anc also international regulations.” |
