“Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence”, were the great words of Lin Yutang, famous Chinese writer and inventor – such is the philosophy of the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo.

The club has been dynamic throughout the past and their work has been self-rewarding. This time around plans are being put in place for ‘Esperanza 2012’, - concert featuring some of the biggest music stars in the island and is in aid of funding the secondary education of under-privileged children in the country, which comes under the ‘Project Intuition’ set up by the club. ‘Esperanza’ - translated as ‘Hope’ in Spanish is an event for music lovers of all genres and will bring together the likes of BNS and Battery, as well rock music in the form of Nemesis and Road Kill.
The Rotaract club of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo was established in the year 2004, with the main objective of providing valuable services to uplift the standards of the students of the faculty and also to contribute to the community at every possible occasion. The club has been actively participating in the events of the Rotaract District 3220 and presently has 70 members.
The club is sponsored by the Rotary club of Colombo Downtown. “This year, our destination will be reached through, ‘Project Intuition’”, the committee stated. “Project ‘Intuition’, is a community service project which has two phases to it. Phase One consists of a series of seminars conducted by the undergraduates for the G.C.E O/L students of the Ampara educational zone. While phase Two focuses on unearthing the high achievers at the GCE O/L examination, despite poor financial circumstances, and we will step forward to completely sponsor their secondary education”, a member of the committee mentions.
“This is the first time that a project of this calibre has been organized in the Ampara district and we the Rotaractors of the Faculty of Science - University of Colombo, are proud to have taken the initiative,” a member of the committee tells us.
The concert is to be held at the Ananda College Auditorium on February 3, 2012. Tickets are available at the gate. |
