Fighting cancer through screening and early detection

The Rotary Club of Colombo hopes to raise funds for their early detection project with a musical programme on January 25, 2012

Very few people are aware that, each year, around 15000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Sri Lanka and that over 50% are females and over 80% from the rural sector. Most of these cases finally lose their lives primarily due to late detection. It has been found that with screening and early detection almost 30% of cancer related deaths can be prevented. That would mean saving around 5000 lives every year.

Recognizing the life saving value of screening and early detection, the Rotary Club of Colombo, launched the Cancer Screening and Early Detection Project in partnership with the Ministry of Health 7 years ago. Whilst the building, infrastructure and equipment is provided by the Club, the facilities such as examination, screening ,diagnosis and counselling is provided by the National Cancer Control Programme doctors and nurses. To date, the Cancer Early Detection Centre located in a rented premises at Narahenpita, has screened over 11000 individuals from all parts of the country, from Jaffna to Hambantota, primarily low income, and over 2000 detections have been made, of cases needing further investigation for cancer.

The Cancer Early Detection Centre is presently the only national facility offering a comprehensive screening and early detection service entirely free of charge, as well as carrying out awareness building for prevention, with the focus on the less privileged members of our community. The Rotary Club of Colombo is taking steps to continue and expand their current operation as well as to make available the medical personnel and offer regular screening. A permanent Centre with state of the art facilities is being planned with the support of a leading Corporate, since it is essential that we screen more people as well as install Laboratory facilities for investigation, and other facilities so essential for early detection and follow up.

Since regular sources of funding are required to manage this facility, the Club will be conducting a Sing Along at the Hotel Galadari on January 25, 2012 from 7 pm onwards to raise funds.

Members of the public requiring further information or are desirous of assisting this initiative may write to rotarycolombo1929@gmail.com.
