Undoubtedly, 2012 is considered a significant year to many across the world. Apart from the dramatic rumours and stories signalling this year as the end of the world, it is also considered as a year of hope and ‘good luck’, the highlight of the year being the Olympic games.
During this leap year, the world will gather in August to witness an eventthat has prevailed for centuries where nations set aside differences and congregate in onelocation to display unity, peace and camaraderie. In short, the year promises to be eventful andjust as lively as last year.
And yet, while we set out to achieve our goals and fulfill our resolutions, there are those around
us that maintain the same resolutions every year; to find employment or a sustaining source ofincome, to provide a better livelihood for their families, an education for their children or justsimply to survive in an environment where the cost of living escalates day by day and naturaldisasters are on the rise affecting lives and property.
The reality is that each year presents itsown book of challenges and hardships where hope seems but a dream, a fantasy, or even a wish upon a star for many. But there is one thing we should keep in mind as we prepare to put our resolutions into action
and face this new year: hope is not something that appears out of thin air; it is a candle, asource of strength and light found within the heart of man; and it is a light that can be spread toothers.
You and I are pillars of hope to a people that have lost all hope in this world or even inour own nation. Yes, it is true that one person alone cannot impact a whole nation or even aworld; but each step we take towards looking out for others and lending a helping hand tostrangers in whatever way we can, is a candle of hope lit for a brighter future.
As you begin this new year, remember the potential you have within. You are a candle of hopewaiting to be lit and the only person who can light that candle is you. Let us not be distracted bythe ‘events’ and drama surrounding this year; instead let’s shift our focus and direction towards
our communities and nation. Strive to make your 2012 a year where you brought hope tosomeone, a family or a community.
At the end of this year, despite whatever hardships orchallenges we face, one thing is certain in this atmosphere of uncertainty: that our actions left apermanent imprint in the hearts of the people we helped and in our own hearts. Hope is achoice to take action! Make it your choice this year.
“Hope, like the gleaming taper’s light, adorns and cheers our way; and still, as darker grows the night, emits a brighter ray” - Oliver Goldsmith
